Being on the Board: The Commissioner External Affairs

This week, we’re showcasing all the different board functions here on the website! The fourth one is by Dana, the commissioner external affairs of the board.

“When I started as a commissioner external affairs, I wanted to gain experience in the working field and learn how to work professionally with actual cultural companies. I liked this function because you get to work within as well as outside the Association.

As commissioner external affairs, you are in charge of the external contacts of the Study Association. You manage the contact with other associations and sponsors. Furthermore, you keep in contact with the university and other cultural organizations, but also with related Associations in and outside of Groningen, which is really fun. The commissioner external affairs also has two event-related tasks: to organize the Taste of Art twice a year as well as all the social drinks at Het Pakhuis. So you get to organize quite a few activities for the members. Furthermore, you help the committees with their acquisition and contracts. The commissioner external affairs has very diverse tasks, in and outside of the Association.

At first, it’s quite scary to approach actual companies and meet with them. But you learn a lot by doing this. You have professional meetings, but you also get to chat with these people in a more casual context. This is very interesting, because you learn how to act appropriate in various situations. I’m not the most outgoing person myself, but I really developed myself in terms of  (professional) contact. I learned how to negotiate and how to be convincing, but I also learned how certain companies function and how I can be a part of that. I met a lot of enthusiastic people, and it’s amazing to see how you can work together with them and support each other, and create nice events together. It’s not just about promotion, it’s about a lot more. You get invited to a lot of fun and informative events, and you have a unique contact with other parties.

It’s been really fun for me that the contact I had outside of the Association are professional as well as fun. You get to see the inside of other organizations as well and you get to be a part of exclusive events, such as drinks and opening parties. I’m really glad that I experienced and learned so much within as well as outside of the Association.”

Apply for the board! Send your motivation and resumé to voorzitter@studieverenigingik.nl before the 5th of May. Keep an eye out for other updates this week about the other functions!
