This week, we’re showcasing all the different board functions here on the website! The third one is by Merel, the chairman of the board.
One of the reasons I wanted to be on the board is because I wanted to contribute to the positive developments of the Study Association. By being part of the board you are able to change many things about the Association and you are able to influence many decisions regarding events, focal points, and many others. I wanted to put my stamp on the Study Association, for example by making changes regarding internationalization. Another reason why I wanted to become chairman of the board is because I wanted to be able to deal with responsibility. As a chairman, you are responsible for the whole Study Association, and your fellow board members. This is an important competence that I wanted to acquire during my board year.
As a chairman you have many tasks. You have a lot of contact with people such as teachers, students, committees, and many other parties that are involved with the Study Association. You lead the board meetings and you make sure that your fellow board members accomplish their tasks. The chairman also organizes the informative activities such as the Exam Prep Session. As a chairman, your main task is your responsibility. You are the spokesperson for the Study Association and you need to take the responsibility to express this in a positive way towards the members of the Study Association but also external parties.
During the past year, I have developed myself in various ways. For example, my way of thinking has changed. I have learned how to think a few steps ahead, which results in getting more things done in a shorter amount of time. Also I have become really good at time management. Being on the board is not a full time job, so you are able to take classes next to it and do other things like sports and music practices. It is important that you use your time in an efficient way, which is one of the many things I have learned. As a board member, you also learn to deal with criticism. It is possible that people disagree with you or they want something changed. I have learned to see criticism as an asset to improve and develop the Study Association and myself. When you work in a team it is important to listen to criticism and use it to improve yourself.
What I enjoyed most during my year as a chairman, is the fact that I have been in contact with many different people from various organizations and institutions. You have contact with committees, teachers, and other people at the university. My network has expanded enormously, which will definitely help me in future endeavors. Furthermore, being responsible for so many people is an amazing feeling. This might feel frightening at first, but 99 percent of the time this responsibility is an asset and gives you a lot of motivation, and makes you very proud.
Apply for the board! Send your motivation and resumé to firstname.lastname@example.org before the 5th of May. Keep an eye out for other updates this week about the other functions!
